San Francisco - Travel Information Getting around (and to) San Francisco

With five BART lines running throughout the San Francisco Bay Area, four of which stop at the six main San Francisco stations (from southwest to northeast: 24th St. Mission, 16th St. Mission, Civic Center, Powell St., Montgomery St., and Embarcadero) has made traveling easier within the city.
Maps and schedules are available online and at all stations. BART tickets are like debit cards, each possessing a specific value, which deducts fare for traveling a distance and the ticket can be used until the stored value is used up.
Credit cards can also be used at Charge-A-Ticket (CAT) machines in selected stations. You can also buy tickets online (www.cdsnet-inc.net/tickets2go/bart.htm), by mail (BART Customer Services Center, 800 Madison St., LMA-C Oakland, CA 94607), and at many banks, grocery and drug stores throughout the city. Service runs weekdays from 4am to midnight, Saturdays from 6am to midnight, and Sundays from 8am to midnight, although times at individual stops may vary.

By cable car
If you are visiting San Francisco, don’t miss the cable car ride. If you are in the mood for scenery, get on to the Powell-Hyde line, which begins at Powell Street and ends across from Ghirardelli Square. The Powell-Mason line goes through North Beach and ends near Fisherman's Wharf. The California Street line, the least scenic, crests at Nob Hill and then makes its way to Van Ness Avenue.
The car rides are fairly charged and worth every penny. You can buy a Muni Passport and take all three as often as you like. You may only board a cable car at specific, clearly marked stops.

By Bus
Muni buses run frequently around the city from 6am to midnight and with 80 transit lines, they are the most complete mode of transport. Buses come by every few minutes, depending on where you want to go and the time of day. MUNI buses fill in the gaps in San Francisco's Metro system.

By Ferry
To sail across the Bay to Marin County, you can travel by Golden Gate Ferry at the foot of Market St. Ferries serve Larkspur with last ferry leaving Larkspur at 8:15pm. Fares for Adults are $3.25, seniors $1.60, ages 6-12 $2.45; Sa-Su and holidays. Both lines are wheelchair accessible. Kids under five are free with an adult; ages 6-12 get a 25% discount; seniors and disabled get 50% off. Transfers are free between bus routes and ferries.

The Blue and Gold Fleet also offer Island Hop to Alcatraz and Angel Island. The Harbor Bay Ferry goes between SF and Alameda. The Red and White Ferry have service between SF and Point Richmond.
