Aberdeen
Glasgow
Inverness
Aberdeen, city has long been
famous for its outstanding parks, gardens and floral displays
which greet the visitor - with around 2 million roses, 11 million
daffodils and 3 million crocuses, it is not difficult to see
why Aberdeen is known as the "Flower of Scotland".
Indeed, the city's top attraction is the Winter Gardens at the
Duthie Park which is also home to the stunning Rose Mountain.
Aberdeen has a flourishing cultural scene with excellent collections
of Scottish and Impressionist works and contemporary exhibitions
at the Art Gallery on Schoolhill, and there are smaller galleries
worth seeking out. One can sense that there is a true feeling
of civic pride here and in order to discover more about the
city and its people it is worth visiting some of the city museums
and galleries.
Aberdeen airport, situated 7 miles northwest of the city centre,
is one of the principle gateways to Scotland, with links to
the Northern Isles, Scandinavia and most major cities in the
British Isles. It also serves as an important helicopter base
with services to all the North Sea Oil fields, while trans-Atlantic
crossings are possible with a stop-over in London or Amsterdam.
Glasgow is one of the liveliest
and cosmopolitan city in Europe. Glasgow has been transformed
both in style and vitality since development initiated during
the 1980's. Glasgow boasts world famous art collections, quality
and fashionalble shopping in the United Kingdom outside London,
and the most vibrant nightlife in Scotland. Don't forget to
see the Art Nouveau splendour of Scotland's best known architect
Charles Rennie Mackintosh, whose inimitable style adorns attractions
such as The Lighthouse, Glasgow School of Art, and House for
an Art Lover. There are lots of Art and culture in Glasgow life
where galleries and museums are around every corner, most with
free admission. Some of these include the world's first Museum
of Religion, the famous Burrell Collection, and the contemporary
Gallery of Modern Art.
The airport is located 13km (eight miles) to the west of the
city centre. Glasgow International is Scotlands busiest
airport and the fourth busiest in the UK, with over 86,000 air
transport movements serving over 7.9 million passengers a year,
flying to 40 scheduled and 50 charter destinations.
Inverness is an excellent touring
centre with good road, rail and air connections. With its suspension
bridges across the River Ness and old stone buildings, it is
a pretty place which is well-known for its floral displays.
In fact it won the 1996 award for Best Large Town in the Bloom
of Britain competition. In December 2000, it was one of only
3 towns to be awarded city status by the Queen. The official
ceremony took place on 19 March 2001 and celebrations were held
in July around the time of the Inverness Highland Games.
Inverness airport is located 9 miles east of Inverness city
centre. It is served by BA, Loganair and Highland Airways, and
provides connections to major destinations in the UK, as well
as local regional airports distributed across Scotland. It is
the principle business and leisure airport for the Highlands
and Islands, with charter flights serving holiday centres such
as Zurich and the Mediterranean. |
