Palma - Travel Information
Getting around (and to) Palma |
 |
By Car:
It is one of the cheapest places in the world to hire a car: from
£12 (US$16) per day. There are numerous car hire firms and
large brokers on the island, offering competitive car hire prices.
Driving is on the right hand side. The speed limit on the motorway
is 120km/h, on main roads 100km/h and in urban areas 60km/h. There
are severe penalties for drink driving. In town centres parking
lots marked in blue can only be used with a pay and display ticket,
green means residents only. Petrol stations are often closed on
Sundays and public holidays.
Bus:
Traveling by bus is an efficient and inexpensive alternative. Buses
link Palma to all the main towns. You have to pay as you enter the
bus. The main station is in Palma's Placa d'Esanya.
Rail:
There are two railway lines in Mallorca, connecting Palma to Inca
and Soller. Palma's two stations are close together beside Placa
d'Espanya. Fast trains to Inca take 35 minutes and leave hourly
throughout the day (first train 6.00AM), stopping at Marratxi, Santa
Maria de Cami, Consell, Binissalem, Alaro and Lloseta (information
tel: 971752245).
The journey to the mountains to Soller in an old wooden train takes
1 hour and is great fun. Five trains leave Palma daily, the first
at 8.00AM (tel: 971752051).

Taxi:
Taxis are easy to hail in Palma. Smaller towns usually have taxi
ranks. In the city of Palma, fare is calculated by a meter plus
supplement (airport, port, extra luggage, extra passengers etc.).
Inter-Village tariff applies to the rest of the island. Each taxi
driver carries the tariff table, so ask to see the price if you
have any doubt.
Libre/Lliure means vacant.
Boarding fee: 250 pts.
Mileage: 72 pts per Km. (higher price applies between 9pm and 6am)
Luggage: 75pts per luggage.
Coaches, inter town services
This is certainly the most inexpensive way to visit the
island. Various bus companies run services between Palma and the
rest of Mallorca, as well as between the different villages. In
Palma, there are four streets from where you can catch bus caoches.
All of them are located near Plaza Espara. Regular bus coach services
also operate from the airport to Paisley and Paisley Gilmour Street
station for rail connections to Ayr and the Clyde Coast and to Glasgow
Central station.
