Getting around (and to) Galway |

Galway city is well served by the various types
of public transport available like bus, car, and taxi.
By Air
Galway Airport is located in Carnmore, approximately 6km from Galway
City near Oranmore. The short drive to the city centre is well signposted.
Direct daily flights operate to and from Dublin and London (Luton).
Knock International Airport in Charlestown, Co. Mayo is a little
over an hour from Galway City. Flights run regularly to Knock from
Dublin, London (Stansted), Manchester, and Birmingham.
Shannon International Airport in Co. Clare is an hour and a half
south of Galway City.
Shannon Airport offers a wide range of direct flights from Dublin,
the UK, continental Europe, and North America.
By Rail
The Ceannt Station in Galway City is just off Eyre Square in the
centre of the city.
Traveling by rail is the easiest and safest way around Galway and
with Irish Rail/Iarnrod Eireann running regular train service to
Dublin with stops at major towns; you can enjoy the comfortable
journey. Advance booking is not necessary and trains offer a dining
service.
By Car
You can travel to Galway in your own car or book your car hire from
any of the world-class car hire companies running at airports or
most towns. Driving in Ireland is on the left hand side of the road
and the N6 is the major road from Dublin. Drive from Dublin to Galway
is 140 miles and will take approximately 3 hours. Some towns are
bypassed, with others the N6 goes through the main street offering
a fascinating glimpse of daily life.

on where to return your car, as there are locations within the airport.
By Coach
Galway roads often find buses and coaches running from Dublin, and
other major towns.
Bus Éireann, the national bus company of Ireland has routes
radiating out from Dublin and between all major towns. Galway serves
as a central hub for the West of Ireland. Buses go to Ceannt Station
(also the railway station) just off Eyre Square in the centre of
Galway City.
Coach companies that offer services around and outside the city
are Citylink Travel Services provides a daily express coach service
between Galway and Dublin and Dublin Airport. Nestors Travel is
a local coach company offering national routes. TurloughMore, Athenry,
Co. Galway, Michael Nee Coaches run during the summer and links
up with the Inishbofin ferry at Cleggan, a small town near Clifden
in Connemara.
