Bantry House
Overlooking Bantry Bay in the south west of Ireland, Bantry House
is a stately home. The house is owned by Mr. and Mrs. Shelswell-White.
This Castle is amongst the three other castles to be built on this
site. The first castle built in wood in the tenth century was later
replaced by a second structure of stone. The current structure was
built under Dermot McCarthy, King of Munster. The Castle’s
lower walls are five meters tall, built with an angle tower.
Bantry House is said to have been built by the McCarthys of Muskerry
but was occupied at one time by Cormac McCarthy, King of Munster,
who is said to have supplied four thousand men from Munster to supplement
the forces of Robert the Bruce at the battle of Bannockburn in 1314.
Legend has it that the latter king gave half of the Stone of Scone
to McCarthy in gratitude. T Today, known as the Blarney Stone has
been incorporated in the battlements where it can now be kissed.
Since 1945 the house containing its exotic collection of furniture,
tapestries and objects d’art has been open to the public.
Today, the house or parts of it can also be rented for weddings,
functions and special events.
The Cathedral of St. Mary & St. Anne
The Cathedral of St Mary & St Anne was built in 1808. The structures
reflect the Neo-Gothic style with a 180 ft Tower built over the
Great West Door in 1868. Around 1967, once again it was renovated
and refurbished in 1995-1996, to bring it into line with modern
liturgical requirements.
The visitors are simple left to wonder over the interior of the
cathedral which features many items of heritage value, notably 27

a brilliant architect.

seaward bastions, the Devil's and the Charles' would defend the
harbor. Both of these have gun embrasures inside as well as on top
of the walls.
The North, Flagstaff and the Cockpit, are the three landward bastions
and all three had a brick sentry box at their outermost point, two
