At the inclusion of the Hudson River, Long Island,
and the Atlantic Ocean, the unique cultural place housing an entire
world within its 58sq km (23sq miles) is none other then the multicultural
capital, New York.
The cultural diversity branching out from the city’s rich
history contributes to its importance as a port and the disembarkation
point for millions of immigrants to the USA. In the early 1620s,
the first European settlement on Manhattan was by the Dutch who
named the city New Amsterdam. When the British took over in 1664,
they renamed it New York. The city rapidly flourished, expanding
from south to north along the island with emergence of distinct
ethnic quarters developing into a prosperous city.
Today, New York boasts about its rich culture. It has rapidly developed
with over 20,000 eclectic restaurants, 150 excellent museums, and
more than 10,000 stores overflowing with brand names and bargains
from across the globe.
An excellent place to visit at any time of year, and particularly
pleasant during the spring and fall, when temperatures float around
21ºC (70ºF), New York does have something for everyone.
