Ulster American Folk Park
Ulster American Folk Park, Situated at the bottom of the Sperrin
Mountains on the banks of the River, is a remarkable museum
reflecting the story of the 19th century Irish folks.
This living museum re-creates the experiences of Ulster folk,
with reconstructions of dwellings on this side of the Atlantic
and in the New World.
The museum is approximately one and a half hours from Belfast
(Take the M1 route).
The sounds of the creaking timbers and the foul smells and
the indoor museum exhibition provide an insight into the treacherous
conditions experienced by many thousands of emigrants.
It displays some interesting artifacts from both sides of
the Atlantic and explaining reasons for leaving Ireland and
the opportunities open to emigrants in a new land.
No doubt it reveals a Living History to bring the past to
life, making visitors rarely forget.
Saint Patrick Centre
The centre rejoices the life and heritage of Ireland's patron
saint. It holds a permanent exhibition entitled Ego Patricius
(the story of St Patrick). In June 1999, a time capsule containing
messages from local school children was buried in the building;
it is due to be reopened in 2080!
It provides free entry for the visitors
Belfast Cathedral
It is one of the most visited free attractions in Belfast.
The Cathedral is built in the Hiberno-Romanesque style using
Irish marbles, mosaics and stained glass. The building exhibits
a Celtic cross, the largest in Ireland.
There has been worship on the site since the 1700's. The present
Cathedral building was opened in 1904.
A choir offers high quality music each Sunday at 11.00am and
3.30pm.
Visiting choirs and orchestras are welcome. Group tours are
facilitated.
Belfast City Hall
The most imposing attraction, the Belfast City hall is a neo
Renaissance monolith of Portland stone pillars, pediments
and parapets. The building's facade is rigidly symmetrical
and the interior is artistically done with Italian marble
and oak paneling, while the perimeter is dotted with statuary,
notably a suitably dour-looking Queen Victoria, a monument
to the victims of the Titanic and a statue of Sir Edward Harland,
founder of the Harland & Wolff shipyard which constructed
the doomed liner.
It is lined with fancifully ornate edifices such as the Scottish
Provident Building, with statues of industrial icons, sphinxes,
dolphins and lions' heads on the outside.
